Waterfowl and Partridge hunting in South Africa is seasonal. The seasons begin on May 1 and end on August 31.  The very best times for partridge, goose and duck hunting are from the beginning of July all the way until the end of August.

Typical Hunting Days Agenda:

Dove and Pigeon Hunting

For the first two days of pigeon and dove hunting you will be served breakfast around 7 am and then drive to the fields where the birds are flying the best. This could entail up to an hour drive, depending on where the best flights are occurring. The morning shoot usually starts around 9 am and slows down around 11:30 -12 :00. The outfitter will then prepare lunch right there in the field and you will relax before getting into position for the afternoon shoot.

Eating lunch during the wing shoot

On a normal day the birds will begin to slow down towards 4:00 to 5:00 in the late afternoon. The highest volume shooting you will experience is the pigeon and dove hunt and the best times of year for dove and pigeon is May, June and July.  August until October are still good but with less volume.

Waterfowl Hunting

Depending on where the waterfowl are flying, you will set up early in the morning before sunrise and shoot until around 10 am. Then you will normally have a brunch that is prepared right there.  For the afternoon, depending on your location, you may do a guinea fowl driven shoot, or shoot doves / pigeons before late afternoon when you will set up for the late afternoon waterfowl shoot. This will last until after sunset.

The best times for waterfowl are from July onwards with August / September being the best.

Guinea Fowl Hunting

The guinea fowl hunting is fun, but the harvested numbers run lower than the other forms of hunting due to the nature of a driven hunt when using pointer dogs for this species. June through September is the best times for hunting Guinea fowl in this region.

The Wing Shooting Lodge

You will stay at a 4-star lodge that features in-suite bathrooms and comfortable beds.  The food is some of the best I have experienced in South Africa.  The lodge features a swimming pool and air conditioning. Wi-fi and cell phone service is available in camp.

"I spent weeks visiting websites for outfitters in Namibia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe, comparing pre-made packages and regular fees. In the end, for a 7-day, six animal hunt with my son as an observer/hunter, John Martins had the best price."

'It was the most exciting hunt I have ever been on. We stalked a small bachelor group for a few days before I shot a mature cape buffalo with my Browning 375 H&H.'

'This was my third hunt with Discount African Hunts and each one has been fantastic.  I don't think I would book my future African hunts with anyone else.'
