This affordable hunting safari takes place in the Northern Cape outside of Kimberly for three classic African animals. The Northern Cape offers some mountainous terrain that adds an exciting elevation element to this hunt!
About the Trophy Animals:
The kudu is a highly prized trophy among hunters due to its striking spiral horns and elusive nature. These antelopes are one of the most popular game animals to take in Africa and are known for their keen senses and ability to quickly vanish into the bush, making a hunt for them challenging and rewarding. Kudu are most active in the early morning and late afternoon, and can often be found emerging from the bush to drink from water sources. Bagging a giant requires patience. Their greyish-brown coats camouflage them into their surroundings, adding to the difficulty in finding a giant.
The blue wildebeest, also called the brindled gnu, is another exciting animal to hunt! They are known for their tough bodies and unpredictable movements, and these animals require a precise shot and steady hand to ensure an ethical harvest. Blue wildebeest are commonly found in open savannas and grasslands and often move in herds, which adds to the challenge of selecting the right target amid the herd. Because of their keen eyesight and group behavior, you and your PH will need to very carefully stalk and position yourselves for your best chance at harvesting the biggest trophy!
The bushbuck is a small and highly elusive antelope. They prefer dense cover near water sources, and they rely on their stealth and natural camouflage to avoid detection. They sport spiraled horns and have striking white markings along their chest and bodies. Bushbucks are known for their solitary and skittish behavior, requiring slow, methodical tracking and precise shot placement. Due to their habitat preferences of the dense bush, encounters are often at close range, and you will need to be ready to take your shot at a moment's notice.
The Hunting Area and Terrain:
This hunt takes place on a private concession in the Northern Cape about 100 km from Kimberly. It covers 6,000 acres and has an abundance of trophy-quality animals on it. This concession has mountainous areas with lots of small shrubs, as well as lots of hillsides and vantage points, making it easy to glass for trophies from the cliffsides. The area is part Karoo/part Kalahari, which is somewhat dry and arid.
Plains Game Hunting Seasons in the Northern Cape:
This hunt is available year-round and can be booked for any time period other than from December 15-January 7.. That being said, hunting between the months of May through September will give you the best hunting experience, as it is drier during these months and the bush tends to thin out a bit, giving you the best chance to spot the biggest trophies more easily.
About the Outfitter:
This outfitter has spent decades hosting clients on successful African safaris and making every trip unforgettable. With exclusive hunting rights on this concession, he knows the land like the back of his hand, giving you the best possible chance at a successful hunt. His camp staff is friendly and attentive, ensuring your stay is smooth and comfortable. But the real treat? The food. His kitchen team serves up some of the best meals you’ll find anywhere in Africa—truly something to look forward to after a long day in the bush.
From the moment you arrive, his passion for hunting and hospitality shines through. He genuinely cares about every guest, making sure your experience is nothing short of amazing. His concession is tightly managed to keep animal populations healthy and genetics strong, meaning you’ll have access to top-quality trophies. Between world-class hunting, a relaxing lodge, and incredible food, staying with him is more than just a trip—it’s an experience you’ll never forget.
Northern Cape Plains Game Lodge and Accommodations:
You’ll be staying at this outfitter’s 3-star lodge. Each bedroom has A/C as well as en-suite bathrooms, and the entire lodge has both permanent and two redundant backup power systems to stave off any loss of electricity. There is cell service and WiFi here.
This lodge features a rustic traditional African style and is very neat and clean. This outfitter prides himself on the food he serves, and it is simply outstanding. The kitchen staff is phenomenal and is excellent at providing top-notch meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You won’t be able to wait to get out of the bush just so you can kick back and enjoy the cooking!
A Typical Day Hunting Plains Game in the Northern Cape:
Your day starts with a light breakfast and a hot cup of coffee or tea at the lodge, freshly prepared by the kitchen team. Once you’re fueled up for your day ahead, you and your PH will go over the day’s conditions to pick the best spot to kick off the morning hunt. You can expect to hunt all the animals in this package with a classic spot-and-stalk method. Your adventure will likely begin with a drive to the cliffs and hillsides, glassing for a glimpse of a trophy animal. When a promising sign appears, it’s time to head in toward where they were spotted and get into position for the stalk.
As you move through the concession’s varied landscapes—from mountains to open plains—you’ll rely on your PH’s keen eye and your patience to get within a good shooting range. Every stalk is different, so be prepared for the unexpected and be ready to change tactics on the fly! If a quality trophy presents itself and you’re comfortable with the shot, you’ll set up on shooting sticks, take aim, and make your shot count!
By midday, it’s back to the lodge for lunch and a chance to regroup before the afternoon hunt. As the temperatures cool, the bush comes alive again, offering fresh opportunities to find game in the fading light. It’ll be back to finding good vantage points to scan the landscape in search of your animals! Once the sun dips below the horizon, you’ll return to camp for a well-earned dinner, unwind by the fire, and relive the day’s best moments—already looking forward to what’s in store for tomorrow!
