This plains game package contains a Greater southern kudu, nyala, blesbuck, and a warthog. The hunt will take place on a game reserve in KwaZulu-Natal that gets very little hunting pressure. This reserve has extremely high-quality animals and it is renowned for its abundance of big kudu and trophy Cape buffalo. All of the big 5 excluding lions are found here as well. It’s only a 4-hour trip by road from Johannesburg, making travel logistics straightforward and a breeze once you land.
About the Animals:
Kudus are one of Africa’s most iconic antelope species and are found in the woodlands and scrublands of Africa. They sport majestic spiral horns and striking white facial markings. They rely on their keen senses and natural camouflage to stay hidden and avoid predators, often moving through dense thickets and open woodlands. Since they are most active during the mornings and late afternoons, it is the best time for hunters to spot them and begin a stalk. It is possible to harvest up to a 60” kudu on this concession at no additional cost! The Nyala is another trademark spiral horn of Africa. They are an antelope with striking white lines and large horns. South Africa has more nyala than any other country in the world, with KwaZulu-Natal hosting 80% of these magnificent spiral-horned animals. Like the kudu, these animals are most active in the early morning hours and throughout the late afternoon, which is prime time to spot your trophy nyala. You can expect to harvest a trophy between 26"-28", though larger ones can be found on this reserve.
Blesbuck, native to the vast grasslands of South Africa, are easily recognizable antelopes with their striking white facial blaze and rich brown coats. Hunting blesbuck is especially challenging due to their acute senses and preference for open terrains, as hunters must adeptly maneuver through expansive areas with limited cover, relying on stealth and meticulous planning to remain undetected. 16"-18 Blesbuck trophies can be expected here. Warthogs are found throughout Africa and have large tusks set into flat, thick heads. Contrary to their appearance, they are very agile and can reach speeds up to 30 miles per hour, presenting a difficult shot for hunters if on the move.
The Hunting Area and Terrain:
This plains game hunt unfolds on a sprawling 17,000-acre game reserve in Kwazulu-Natal, offering an exceptional hunting experience in a reserve with minimal hunting pressure and limited human interaction. The terrain here is very diverse and ranges from open grassy plains to deep valleys and mountainous regions, interspersed with patches of dense African bush. This concession is also home to four of the Big Five, with lions being the only species not present. It boasts an abundant plains game population, particularly blesbuck, zebra, kudu, blue wildebeest, eland, and red hartebeest. The standout trophies here are kudu, eland, red hartebeest, blesbuck, and wildebeest. Notably, 60”+ kudu can be found on the surrounding free-range areas. You might get lucky with dedication and effort, especially during the months of April and May. It is recommended to focus primarily on kudu and nyala hunting during this package (any kudu over 60” incurs an additional $8,000 trophy fee). There are lots of Cape buffalo that reside here and they range from 40” - 48”, as well as many red hartebeests that score over 23”, and many blesbucks at 16”-18”. You will likely spot the resident hippos and crocodiles during your hunt. Stay back from the waters edge, as these crocs are large and hungry!
Hunting Seasons:
This hunt is available from March through September, but the ideal times are April through July. Coming anytime during this period will be prime hunting time.
