Hunting at night in Africa is an experience like no other - the animals are quick, the shots need to be fast, and everything around you is pitch black. These night hunts let you see and hunt Africa in a totally different way!

About the Night Critters:

Africa is home to some incredible small predators and nocturnal creatures. Since they only come out at night, they’re not often what first comes to mind when thinking about African trophy animals, but they are just as important nonetheless! Some of the most popular nocturnal animals to hunt are the honey badger, jackal, genet, porcupine, and civet— and each comes with its own quirks and challenges. These unique trophies can showcase a part of Africa rarely seen or thought about!

The honey badger is famous for being one of the toughest and most fearless animals out there. It will take on anything—even lions—and is incredibly difficult to kill, making it a rare but impressive trophy. The jackal is a wily scavenger that often preys on young antelope and livestock, so it’s commonly hunted to help manage predator populations. The genet has a sleek, spotted coat and cat-like agility. They are easy to miss and tend to slink away quickly, so shots taken need to be quick!

The porcupine is an herbivore and makes for a very fun hunt. They can often be found digging in fields and can easily become a nuisance to landowners and their crops. Their long, sharp quills are their best defense, keeping most predators at bay. The African civet has a striking coat and a musky scent. Like the genet, they are secretive and elusive, and as soon as that spotlight hits them, you need to be ready to take that shot!

While these animals might not be the quintessential animals of Africa, these night hunts are very unique and special. You get a fast-paced exciting hunt with conditions not usually found in many other hunts, and you can also go home with some unique and lesser-known trophies that not many hunters are able to brag about.

The Nocturnal Hunting Area and Terrain:

This 12,000-acre hunting concession in Limpopo Province, South Africa, is located near Alldays, just south of the Botswana border. The terrain is a true mix of classic African bushveld. Small sections are covered in dense thickets, creating the ideal cover for game, while other parts have open grassy plains that offer clear visibility, making for great stalking opportunities. The majority of the area is small shrubs and tall trees. There are also rolling hills that break up the landscape, along with riverine areas that weave through parts of the concession. With these different types of areas, hunters can experience a variety of hunting methods and techniques, as there is always something new around every corner.

Nocturnal African Animal Hunting Seasons:

This is a year-round hunt and can be booked anytime for your convenience. However, the best times to come are between the months of May to September right before or after a new moon. Hunting during a dark moon on this hunt gives you the best chances of seeing the greatest variety of animals.

About the Nocturnal African Outfitter:

This outfitter has decades of experience ensuring his clients have a great African safari. He has hunted and managed this specific concession for over 13 years and holds exclusive hunting rights to it. He has a very well-trained camp staff who are competent and go out of your way for anything you need to be done. His cook staff is extremely well trained as well and they consistently prepare some of the best meals to be found in Africa.

You can tell right away that he appreciates every single one of his guests and that he is passionate about making sure you enjoy your hunting time there in Africa. His concessions are managed properly and professionally to ensure great trophies and good genetics are cultivated in them, and that all the animals he offers on his pricelist can support robust and healthy populations. Nocturnal Animal Lodge and Accommodations:

The lodge you will stay at for this night critters hunt is a 3.5-star main lodge. There are A/C’s in each room. The lodge features a pool, lounge, bar, and both indoor and outdoor dining areas. The patio has a firepit to relax at before heading out for your night hunt.

This lodge really stands out with its incredible food. They know how to prepare a killer meal here and it shows. All the food and drinks here are made incredibly well and are certainly a standout feature of this lodge. Cell phone and internet service are also available while in camp.

A Typical Night Hunting Nocturnal Animals:

Night hunting is very dynamic and the exact way of hunting can differ. Getting the best trophies and extracting the most fun from your hunt is dependent on how long and hard you hunt. This outfitter recommends hunting from at least sunset through midnight to get quality trophies and to knock off the whole list of nighttime animals, but staying out longer can keep increasing your chances of seeing a big trophy and of seeing a more diverse array of night critters!

You can normally expect to enjoy dinner at the lodge and head out afterward to hunt. They use a whole array of different hunting methods for these night hunts, and you and your PH can discuss what methods will suit you best and what they believe will work best to get you your trophies. Some animals can be baited while you sit and wait in a blind, and some can be spotlighted from the truck. Your PH may also use predator calls as well to lure in trophies. This outfitter also has night vision scopes for you to use if you’d like. You are also more than welcome to bring thermal scopes and hunt with those if you have them. There is such a wide array of methods and tactics to choose from that you and your PH will be able to decide together what best will work for you.

Other Available Animals:

There are many other great animals to take if you have the opportunity during your night hunt! The species below are all able to be found in trophy quality here on the concession!

Trophy Care and Shipping:

Your animal will be skinned and put in salt after harvesting. Splitting Image will typically pick up your skins about 30 days after your safari ends.

Rental Rifle:

Rifle rental cost is $100 for the entire hunt and ammunition costs $200 per box.

Depending on your PH, the outfitter has these rifle calibers available to rent, with solids available for each of them:

  • .223
  • .308
  • .375 H&H

If you plan to bring your own rifle, the outfitter recommends calibers in the .300s, such as a .300, .30-06, .308, and .375. Smaller caliber rifles in the .200 caliber range are also good as long as you bring some solids. We strongly suggest that you use solid bullet points for the smaller animals.

Getting There:

You will first fly into Johannesburg and, depending on your arrival time, either fly directly to Polokwane or stay overnight in the African Sky guest house and fly out the next morning. There, you'll meet the outfitter in the arrivals hall and begin your 2-hour trip to the hunting lodge. If choosing to come from Johannesburg, it is a 5-hour drive to the lodge and a $400 round trip charge. Once you arrive, you will be greeted by the lodge staff and begin preparing for the next day’s hunt!

Deposit and Payment Policy:

A 30% deposit is due to book this hunt. The full balance must be paid either by US cash, wire transfer, or credit card (3% fee) at arrival, with any extra animals paid at the end of the hunt.
