About the African Lion:
The lion is the apex predator in Africa and is known for their agility, bone-crushing power, and aggressiveness. They are the quintessential King of the Jungle. These powerful animals strike fear just by spotting them and are well known for their aggressiveness. They charge their prey in devastating head-on attacks, making them extremely dangerous in the field. These animals can grow to be over 10 feet long and exceed 500 pounds of pure muscle. These lions are captive-bred and released with strict guidelines into the concession well before you arrive to allow them to begin hunting the land and claiming their territory. Within just a few days they fully acclimate into the area and begin building up their own territory, hunting, and terrorizing the resident plains game. There is a reason why this trophy is often considered the crown jewel in the collection of many African hunters!
The Lion Hunting Area and Terrain:
This concession consists of over 12,000 acres of bushveld in the North West province near the Botswana border. The concession has a small mountainous area and a bit of open grassland. The majority of the land is bushveld consisting of small shrubs and tall trees, with riverine areas scattered throughout. A network of roads that run through the concession help to spot and identify a trophy lion track and to start your stalk on him!
Lion Hunting Seasons:
This hunt can be taken anytime during the year, allowing anyone with even the busiest schedule to harvest a lion. However, May through September is part of the cooler times of the year and the outfitter does recommend those months for the best time to hunt lion on foot.
About the Lion Outfitter:
This outfitter has been providing quality hunts for years and is excited to offer his packages to Discount African Hunts at an unbelievable value! He and his staff are exceptionally client-focused and really do strive to make you feel at home and excited for the hunt. They care about their trophy quality and the client experience and it shows. The lodge is kept up very well by well-trained staff, the concession is expertly managed with high-grade animals, and the experience you receive is of the utmost importance to him. He has a great reputation and will keep it that way.
The Lion Lodge and Accommodations:
The lodge this outfitter uses for these lion hunts is a 3-star lodge that is quaint but very nicely appointed. The main lodge is the classic rustic African style with thatched roofs, as are the chalets. Each chalet has an en-suite bathroom and fans in the room. Power to the main lodge and chalets is provided by generators and solar.
The main lodge consists of an indoor dining area, kitchen, pool, and patio. The beautiful large open patio has a firepit and outdoor dining area to enjoy dinner and unwind after the day’s hunt. The food at this lodge is the cherry on top - it is exceptional and one of the most outstanding experiences about staying here. Cell phone and internet service are available in camp as well.
A Typical Day Lion Hunting:
Before sunrise, you can expect to wake up and begin the day with breakfast and coffee in the main lodge. Just as the sun is rising and the bush is becoming visible, you’ll head out with your team to begin the morning hunt. You’ll have at minimum a tracker and professional hunter as your guide for the hunt. You and the team will start by driving the roads looking for any sign of fresh lion tracks that may have crossed them from the night before. Since lions prefer to hunt at night, they are most active then and it is likely to see their tracks crossing over a road the next day. If your tracker spots a fresh set of tracks, that’s when the real hunt begins!
Remember, this hunt is all about tracking and stalking a lion on foot, so be prepared to walk and stalk. Once you head away from the truck and into the bush, you and your PH will need to keep your eyes peeled and your head on a swivel. These lions have a tendency to realize they are being tracked and try to outmaneuver you, and they are masters of blending into the bush and sneaking up on you!
You’ll keep pursuing him for as long as it takes to get a visual of him. Once you do, it’s time to strike! You and your PH will find the best place to set up and take your shot from. You’ll get into position, line up, and take your shot! Don’t miss either, because a wounded lion makes an angry lion! It’s a heart-pounding and exciting hunt that puts you right up close and in the face of a growling giant lion!
Other Available Animals:
There are many other great animals to take if you have the chance after your hunt! Each species on the pricelist has trophy-quality specimens that reside on this concession!
Trophy Care and Shipping:
Your animal will be skinned and put in salt after harvesting. Splitting Image will pick it up after your safari has ended once the transport permits have been processed and issued.
Rental Rifle:
Rifle rental cost is $100 for the entire hunt and ammunition costs $200 per box.
The outfitter has a .375 H&H available to rent.
If you plan to bring your own rifle, the minimum caliber allowed is .375 H&H.
Getting There:
You will first fly into Johannesburg, South Africa and, depending on the time of your arrival, either drive directly to the lodge (5-hour drive) or stay overnight at the African Sky guest house and drive to the concession the next morning. Once you arrive, you will be greeted by the lodge staff and begin preparing for the next day’s hunt!
Deposit and Payment Policy:
A 30% deposit is due to book this hunt. The full balance must be paid either by US cash, wire transfer, or credit card (3% fee) at arrival, with any extra animals paid at the end of the hunt.
Cancellation Policy:
Deposits are non-refundable. The outfitter may allow a safari to be rescheduled once if requested a minimum of 90 days in advance of the start of the safari at the sole discretion of the outfitter. Rescheduling may result in a price increase, as there are carrying costs associated with holding lions. Any deposits for no-shows are forfeited and will be retained by the outfitter as liquidated damages and no credit for such forfeits will be offered. Any rescheduled safaris are subject to a $150 administration fee to be paid directly to the booking agent. Travel insurance can be obtained to cover unexpected illnesses. A Travel Policy is strongly recommended when traveling to remote areas in foreign countries.
Exclusions: International and domestic airfare, rifle rental, ammunition, rifle importation costs, shipment of trophies to a taxidermist, taxidermy, international shipping of trophies, insurance, gratuities
