Hunting wild lions is a special and rewarding hunt. Every step in the process brings excitement and a new challenge for you to learn and overcome, and it all leads up to one big final moment: getting a big cat on bait and pulling the trigger on him. This hunt takes place at a comfortable 3-star lodge that provides you all the comforts away from home that you need while hunting the big one!

About the African Lion:

The lion is a true icon of untamed Africa, with a golden coat that perfectly blends into the savanna and a thick mane that displays strength and maturity. These big cats are built for both speed and power, with keen senses that help them track their prey. Male lions stand guard, protecting the pride and keeping the territory safe. Their ferocious roars strike fear into any animal - or human - wishing to challenge them or their pride, reminding you that you’re in the presence of one of nature’s most impressive predators.

Lions have very active social lives. They live in close-knit pride where every member—from cubs to experienced female hunters—plays an important role. The way they work together to take down prey and care for each other during sickness or injury is remarkable and rarely seen in the animal kingdom. Seeing a lion up close and personal out in the field, it is not only a heart-pounding experience but also a powerful reminder of Africa’s untamed ferocity.

The Lion Hunting Area and Terrain in Mozambique:

This hunt takes place on an 80,000-acre concession that shares an unfenced open border with Kruger National Park. It is hunted and managed exclusively by this outfitter. It is mostly flat land here with lots of dense vegetation. The foliage mostly consists of small shrubs, trees, and tall grasses. There are lots of marula, acacia, baobab, and jackalberry trees that grow here as well.

Mozambique Lion Hunting Seasons:

This hunt can be booked anytime between April 1st and November 1st each year. The outfitter recommends that the best time for these wild lions is during the month of July, but August and September are also prime hunting months as there is usually less rainfall leading up to those times and the bush thins out, making it easier to see the animals.

About the Lion Outfitter:

This outfitter has over 25 years of hunting experience guiding clients to trophies of a lifetime. They are a small family-run operation and strive to provide all their clients with the absolute best experience possible. Both the experience of hunting with them and staying in their lodge is superb, and they go out of their way to ensure every minute detail of your stay is perfect. Everyone here is friendly and welcoming. They strive to create memories for you that will last a lifetime, and are certain you will enjoy your time here hunting!

Wild Lion Lodge and Accommodations:

This outfitter has a 3-star lodge for their wild lion hunts. You will be staying in a brick cottage with an ensuite bathroom. Each cottage has a double bed and is furnished with fine linens and traditional African decor.

The cottages all have air conditioning. The main lodge has a patio with an outdoor dining area and a small pool. Internet service is available while in camp.

A Typical Day Hunting Wild Lions in Mozambique:

For this hunt, the lion will be hunted on bait. If you would like, pre-baiting is also an option. The typical procedure begins with finding and shooting bait animals—usually wildebeest or zebra—on the concession. Possibly a buffalo if that is on your agenda. Expect to start early in the morning, getting up before sunrise to grab a quick bite of rusks and coffee before heading out to hunt and set up the bait. Bait animals are hunted by spot and stalking. Once the bait animals are harvested, you and your PH will begin baiting for the lion. You’ll find suitable areas around the concession that would make a good lion hunting spot, and hang the bait animals from trees and scatter their scent around the area. This will encourage any lion in the area to find and claim that animal.

Once the animals are hung, you’ll set up trail cameras to monitor the bait sites. Every day you and your PH will check the trailcams and confirm whether a huntable male lion is feeding on the bait. When a suitable lion is spotted, you will set up a blind near the bait site. You will typically settle in during the afternoon and remain in the blind through the night and into the early morning, depending on the lion’s movements. When there are no signs of lions on the baits, you’ll use the time to replenish the bait or pursue other trophies. This method ensures a well-coordinated and efficient hunt with minimal downtime so you can get the most out of your hunt!

Other Available Animals:

This concession borders Kruger National Park and has many species that are of extremely high quality and plentiful. This hunt is also easily combined with a buffalo hunt for a truly grand African safari experience. Numerous elephants are found in the 50 lbs class, nyala 27”+, kudu mid 50” to 60”+, and numerous old dagga bull buffalo mid 30” to 40”+ are common here. Old mature hippos, crocs that average 3.5 meters, and many waterbuck 22”+ are also commonly seen.

Trophy Care and Shipping:

The trophies will be caped out by the outfitter's team of skinners at their skinning facility. After the trophy has been caped, it will washed in an antibacterial solution and then hung out to wind dry. Once it is dry enough, it will be salted and folded.

This outfitter makes two trips to the taxidermist during the hunting season. Your trophy will be delivered either in July or at the end of November, whichever comes first after your hunt concludes.

Rental Rifles:

Rifle rental cost is $50 per day and ammunition costs $20 per bullet.

The outfitter has two CZ rifles in .375 H&H available to rent for lion hunting.

If you plan to bring your own rifle, it must be a minimum of .375 H&H.

Getting There:

You will first fly into Johannesburg and, depending on the time of your arrival, either fly directly to Nelspruit or stay overnight in the African Sky guest house and fly out the next morning. There, you'll meet the outfitter in the arrivals hall and begin your trip to the lodge, crossing the border into Mozambique by vehicle.. Once you arrive, you will be greeted by the lodge staff and begin preparing for your lion hunt!

Testimonials

"This was my first trip to Africa and can positively say it will not be my only one. Words simply can not describe the events of the hunt.  I hunted with both longbow and compound and took a total of 12 animals.  I speak volumes to Discount  African Hunts. These guys know the ins and outs.  Thank you for my first Amazing African Adventure!"

"I looked long and far for a good deal on a lioness hunt.  By far, Discount African Hunts had the best price.  I had the hunt of a lifetime and took a beautiful lioness at close range with my bow.  The Professional Hunter was first class, the lodge was first class and my whole experience was unbelievable.  I will book with John Martins when I return to Africa to hunt leopard  in Zimbabwe.

"I spent weeks visiting websites for outfitters in Namibia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe, comparing pre-made packages and regular fees. In the end, for a 7-day, six animal hunt with my son as an observer/hunter, John Martins had the best price."
