The South African Giraffe
A giraffe is a sought-after trophy, as it is one of the largest game animals in Africa. It is usually not at the top of the list for first-timers but is usually taken on a subsequent hunting trip to Africa. Giraffe reach heights of up to 19.5’ and can weigh up to 1,900 kg. The sub-species of giraffe that is typically found in South Africa is known as the South African Giraffe, sometimes called the Cape Giraffe.
The Giraffe Hunting Area
Your hunt for Giraffe will occur on a privately-owned 20,000-acre reserve located in the Limpopo Province near the town of Louis Trichard. The nearest airport is in Polokwane. The area is in the Soutpansberg Mountains and has lots of thick bush for giraffe to hide in.
Giraffe Hunting Methods
A typical hunting day will begin by driving the roads and looking for giraffe. Once a suitable bull is spotted, you will get out and proceed to stalk the giraffe on foot. An alternate hunting method is to get to an elevated position where you can glass the surrounding area for giraffe. The terrain is very mountainous, and this hunt will require some walking and even more glassing. Once a trophy bull is located, a stalking plan will be made to get you within shooting position to take your bull. Due to a giraffe’s ability to view the surrounding area from above, good stalking skills will be necessary to get within close range of the giraffe to make your shot.
The Soutpansberg area is also home to some unique plains game species like Limpopo Bushbuck, Klipspringer, Mountain Reedbuck, Mountain Zebra, Nyala and others. This concession is also a great bow hunting destination.
Bow and Crossbow Giraffe Hunting Methods
Giraffe may be hunted with a bow on this concession. Giraffe are mostly hunted from a blind sitting on waterholes, but some stalks may be possible for those hunters wanting to try taking their giraffe via stalking. It is recommended that you have at least a 70# pull bow with a heavy arrow and a sharp 2-bladed broadhead similar to what would be used for hunting brown or grizzly bears. Crossbows are also an acceptable weapon for taking a giraffe.
The Giraffe Hunting Lodge
During your hunt for a Giraffe you will stay in a 4-star lodge set deep in the Limpopo bush. The lodge has permanent power and all bedrooms have in-suite bathrooms. The camp was originally built in the late 70’s for the heads of state and has been renovated recently. This camp has all the necessities to ensure a luxurious stay.
Guests are accommodated in separate chalets. Each of the three chalets is decorated in an African style and has comfortable bedding. Cellular phone service and internet is available in camp.
Getting There
Most clients will fly in to Johannesburg, and depending on the time of arrival, continue to Polokwane or overnight at a Guest House in Johannesburg and then fly to Polokwane in the morning. The outfitter’s representative will meet you at the airport and drive you to camp.
Deposit Policy
The deposit to book this hunt and reserve dates is 50% of the package and any observer fees. The balance of the safari is due in cash or by wire transfer prior to departing camp.
