About the African Lioness:
Lionesses are the backbone of pride dynamics in the wild, playing a crucial role in hunting, nurturing the young, and maintaining social order within the pride. Known for their remarkable hunting prowess, lionesses often work together in coordinated hunts to bring down prey, relying on stealth, speed, and teamwork to secure food for the pride. They are incredibly skilled hunters and typically hunt during the cooler hours of dawn and dusk, utilizing their keen senses and stealthy approach to ambush unsuspecting prey.
Aside from their hunting prowess, lionesses are also devoted mothers and caretakers within the pride. They form strong bonds with their cubs, providing them with nourishment, protection, and valuable life lessons essential for their survival in the harsh African wilderness. Lionesses are also responsible for teaching the cubs hunting skills as they grow, passing down generations of knowledge and ensuring the pride's continued success. However, despite their maternal nature, lionesses can be extremely dangerous to humans if provoked or if they perceive a threat to their territory. These animals are one of Africa’s fiercest predators, and this hunt will bring you right up close and personal to these magnificent animals.
The Lioness Hunting Area and Terrain:
This concession spans over 20,000 acres inside the southern area of Zimbabwe’s Save Valley Conservancy. In the early season, this area has thick bush with some open plains country and rolling hills. As the season continues, the bush begins to thin out some. Granite ridges dot themselves through parts of the area. There is a year-round water source from the Mkwasine River that cuts through the concession, helping to draw in animals from all around the neighboring areas. In addition to lionesses, this concession also holds very high-quality free-range kudu, eland, impala, and bushbuck. Fantastic trophies of these types of animals are all able to be harvested here as well. This outfitter has been hunting this area for 7 years and currently holds exclusive rights to hunt this concession.
Lioness Hunting Seasons:
The season this lioness hunt is available is from May to September. Coming anytime between these two months is prime time to bait and hunt lions.

With over 35 years of experience in the hunting industry, this outfitter has consistently offered high-quality hunts at exceptional value. Specializing in Zimbabwe hunts, they have built a strong reputation for delivering impressive big-game trophies. The Lioness Lodge and Accommodations:
This 3-star permanent lodge has multiple bedrooms each with an en-suite bathroom. The lodge overlooks a pond and has a communal room along with a beautiful outdoor area.
The beds here are very comfortable and meals are very good. Power is permanent and there is also a backup generator in case of any power outages in the area. Cell and internet service are available while in camp.
A Typical Day Lioness Hunting:
Each day you’ll begin by waking up to a breakfast prepared for you. After you eat and get ready for the day of hunting ahead, you and your PH will leave the lodge. Since there is no need for prebaiting for this hunt, you will begin by shooting bait, which usually will be a Zebra or Giraffe. These are the species these PHs prefer and have seen the most amount of success in drawing in a lioness. These baits will be prepared and hung in different spots around the concession and a trail cam will be placed on each. Every day, you and your PH will come and check the trail cams and baits to look for evidence of a lioness who has been feeding there. Once there is a bait that has evidence of a lioness feeding that is the right age and is not pregnant, a blind will be built a short distance from the bait. You and your PH will evaluate what time the lioness is feeding and then make a decision on what time you would like to begin sitting in the blind. Sometimes the best is to sit there from the evening on, but other times it is possible to do an early morning walk-in. Red and white lights that are connected to a rheostat will also be set up in the bait tree. These will turn the light on very gradually, so as to not alert the lioness, but to allow you to see her before you take your shot. You also may use a thermal vision scope to spot the lion as she is coming in to feed before you decide to turn the lights on.
Rental Rifles:
This outfitter has two different rifles for rent.
- Winchester Model 70 in .375 with a Swarovski 3-9
- .458 Lott with Leupold 1-4
If bringing your personal rifle, it must be of caliber .375 H&H or larger.
Trophy Care and Shipping:
Once your lioness is down, the camp staff take over to ensure it is processed correctly. It will first be brought back to camp, where it will be skinned and salted to dry. Any other trophies you shoot will be field-dressed before being brought back to camp and then transferred to the dip and pack agent in Harare, Chipatani.
Getting There:
Most international flights will fly directly into Johannesburg, South Africa. Depending on your arrival time, you will either transfer directly to a flight to Bulawayo or you will stay overnight at the African Sky Guest House. If staying at the African Sky Guest House, you will be picked up from the airport by them, then the next day be dropped off at the airport before your departure time. Once you fly into Bulawayo, the outfitter will be there to meet you at the airport. From there, it is a 6-hour drive to camp. Since you will arrive at camp in the evening, you can expect to begin hunting the next morning.

"I booked a plains game hunt in South Africa through Discount African Hunts. The price was half of what other outfitters were selling the same package of animals for. After being assured by John Martins that this offer was for real I went ahead and booked. Everything turned out just like I was told and I took 7 beautiful trophies on the trip of my lifetime. Don't let the low prices hold you back. I am sure I will never take a hunt of this quality again at a price like I paid. My hunt was awesome!"

"I looked long and far for a good deal on a lioness hunt. By far, Discount African Hunts had the best price. I had the hunt of a lifetime and took a beautiful lioness at close range with my bow. The Professional Hunter was first class, the lodge was first class and my whole experience was unbelievable. I will book with John Martins when I return to Africa to hunt leopard in Zimbabwe.
