This is a fast-paced hunt that puts you up close and personal with the Black Death of Africa: the Cape Buffalo. It’s a heart-pounding experience that every African hunter should experience at some point during their career. You’ll be stalking a monster buffalo on foot through the wild African bush, where any mistake could be costly!

About the Cape Buffalo:

The Cape Buffalo is one of the most dangerous and well-known animals in Africa. Known for their sturdy build and distinctive curved horns, they can weigh up to 1,900 pounds. They are highly social animals, usually living in herds that range from a few dozen to thousands. Their strong group bonds help protect them from predators like lions, which often struggle to take down a healthy adult. While they may at times look calm and laid back, cape buffaloes are unpredictable and are aggressive when threatened, truly embodying their nickname the ‘Black Death.’

Cape buffalo thrive in a variety of habitats, from grasslands to dense forests, as long as there is plenty of water nearby. They are herbivores, feeding mostly on grasses and occasionally on shrubs or leaves when food is scarce. They can be found all over sub-Saharan Africa as one of Africa’s most dangerous animals! The size of the typical cape buffalo you expect to harvest here will be 35”+ to 40”+.

Cape Buffalo Hunting Area and Terrain in Mozambique:

This hunt takes place on a massive 80,000-acre concession that shares an open, unfenced border with Kruger National Park, letting wildlife roam freely between the two areas. It’s exclusively managed and hunted only by this outfitter. The land is mostly flat with thick vegetation, including plenty of shrubs, trees, and tall grasses. You’ll also find lots of marula, acacia, baobab, and jackal berry trees throughout the area.

Cape Buffalo Hunting Seasons:

The season for this hunt runs from April 1st until November 1st each year. Since there is less rain in the wintertime, the outfitter recommends from between July and September as the best times for this hunt. That is due to the vegetation being less thick, and so animals can be easier to spot through the bush.

About the Cape Buffalo Outfitter:

With over 25 years of experience, this outfitter has been guiding hunters to the trophies of a lifetime. As a small, family-run operation, they take pride in delivering an exceptional experience for every client. From the thrill of the hunt to the comfort of their lodge, every aspect of your stay is carefully planned to ensure perfection. Their team is warm, welcoming, and dedicated to making your trip unforgettable. They go above and beyond to create lasting memories, guaranteeing you’ll enjoy every moment of your hunting adventure.

Cape Buffalo Hunting Lodge and Accommodations:

The lodge you will be staying at is the outfitter's main 3-star lodge. You will have a brick chalet to yourself. Each chalet has an en-suite bathroom and features a double bed with fine linens as well as air conditioning.

Each cottage is fitted with traditional African decor. The main lodge has a patio with an outdoor dining area and a small pool. Internet service is available while in camp.

A Typical Day Hunting Cape Buffalo in Mozambique:

A typical day hunting these wild Cape Buffalo in Mozambique begins just before sunrise with a light continental breakfast. After fueling up, you and your PH will head out in search of fresh tracks. You’ll be patrolling the roads that run alongside rivers and checking the natural watering holes for any signs of recent bull activity. For this hunt, you will be focusing on solitary bulls or small groups of dagga boys, as the breeding herds are not for hunting here.

Once fresh tracks are located, the real hunt begins on foot. This can take the entire day, depending on when the buffalo are found. If they have bedded down, you and your PH will hold back and wait for them to start feeding again, which usually happens around midday when swirling winds make a close approach difficult. As the afternoon progresses, the wind becomes more stable, and the buffalo begin moving again, rustling through the brush and creating noise that helps conceal your approach. Carefully closing the distance, you'll assess the bulls, waiting for the right trophy to present a clear shot. Once one does and you and your PH agree on a suitable bull, you’ll set up on a pair of shooting sticks, line up your shot, and then pull the trigger! If you aren’t able to get a good shot on a trophy, you’ll head back to camp and repeat this method the next morning.

Other Available Animals:

This concession borders Kruger National Park and has many species that are extremely high quality and plentiful here. There are numerous elephants here in the 50 lbs class, nyala 27”+, and kudu mid 50” to 60”+. Old mature hippos, crocs that average 3.5 meters and many waterbuck 22”+ are also common to come across.

Trophy Care and Shipping:

The trophies will be caped out by the outfitter's team of skinners at their skinning facility. After the trophy has been caped, it will washed in an antibacterial solution and then hung out to wind dry. Once it is dry enough, it will be salted and folded.

This outfitter makes two trips to the taxidermist during the hunting season. Your trophy will be delivered either in July or at the end of November, whichever comes first after your hunt concludes.

Rental Rifle:

Rifle rental cost is $50 per day and ammunition costs $20 per bullet.

The outfitter has two CZ rifles in .375 H&H available to rent for buffalo hunting.

If you plan to bring your own rifle, it must be a minimum of .375 H&H.

Getting There:

You will first fly into Johannesburg and, depending on the time of your arrival, either fly directly to Nelspruit or stay overnight in the African Sky guest house and fly out the next morning. There, you'll meet the outfitter in the arrivals hall and begin your trip to the lodge. Once you arrive, you will be greeted by the lodge staff and begin preparing for your buffalo hunt!

"I spent weeks visiting websites for outfitters in Namibia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe, comparing pre-made packages and regular fees. In the end, for a 7-day, six animal hunt with my son as an observer/hunter, John Martins had the best price."
