THE DARK BULL GIRAFFE
A dark bull giraffe is a highly sought-after trophy, as it is one of the largest game animals in Africa and is somewhat rare. Giraffes reach heights of up to 19.5’ and can weigh up to 1,900 kg. The sub-species of giraffes that are typically found in South Africa is known as the South African Giraffe, sometimes called the Cape Giraffe. These old bulls are being removed from the herd to prevent inbreeding and because they have passed their breeding prime. The management of giraffe herds requires a certain offtake of giraffes every few years. On occasion, a black giraffe may be available at a slight premium.
THE DARK BULL GIRAFFE HUNTING AREA
The hunting area is near Rustenberg in the Northwest Province of South Africa. The terrain in the area is a mixture of thick bushveld, open meadows, mountains, and farm fields and provides an ideal mixture for plains game and hunting.
Your hunt for a Giraffe will occur on a variety of privately owned concessions averaging many thousands of acres.
THE DARK BULL GIRAFFE HUNTING METHODS
A typical hunting day will begin by driving the roads and looking for a dark bull giraffe. Once a suitable bull is spotted, you will get out and proceed to stalk the dark bull giraffe on foot. An alternate hunting method is to get to an elevated position where you can glass the surrounding area for giraffes. The terrain is varied, and this hunt may require some walking and even more glassing. Once a trophy bull is located, a stalking plan will be made to get you within a shooting position to take your bull. Due to a giraffe’s ability to view the surrounding area from above, good stalking skills will be necessary to get within close range of the dark bull giraffe to make your shot.
This area is also home to a wide variety of both dangerous game and plains game species like Limpopo Bushbuck, Klipspringer, Mountain Reedbuck, Greater Southern Kudu, Nyala, Common Reedbuck, Eland, and several others. This area also provides great bow hunting.
BOW AND CROSSBOW DARK BULL HUNTING METHODS
Dark bull giraffes may be hunted with a bow. Giraffes are mostly bow hunted from a blind sitting near waterholes, but some stalks may be possible for those hunters wanting to try taking their giraffe via stalking. It is recommended that you have at least a 70# pull bow with a heavy arrow and a sharp 2-bladed broadhead like what would be used for hunting brown or grizzly bears. Crossbows having at least a 170 # pull are also an acceptable weapon for taking a giraffe.
THE GIRAFFE HUNTING LODGE
