Whether you’re a beginner who is just starting to knock off trophies from your wish list or a hunting veteran looking for a customizable package to add some more animals to your resume, this plains game package gives you the ability to pick and choose which trophies are right for you. This hunt takes place on a game reserve that has had minimal hunting pressure recently, so finding top-notch trophies here is a breeze! It is a 4-hour drive from OR Tambo to the reserve, where you’ll stay in a 4-star lodge for your trip. This concession is a special place to hunt, with 4 out of the big 5 calling it home (all except lions) and an abundance of high-quality animals including big kudu and Cape buffalo.

The Hunting Area and Terrain:

This hunt takes place within a 17,000-acre game reserve in Kwazulu-Natal. The reserve is a patchwork of open grassy plains, rugged valleys, mountainous regions, and dense African bush, providing a diverse environment for a single concession. Here, four of the Big Five roam, with only lions being absent. This reserve has not been hunted much in recent times and still only sees minimal hunting pressure, which makes for quite the unique hunt to experience and see the animals when they are calm and not easily spooked.

Expect to find exceptional trophies in this well-managed reserve, particularly top-notch eland, wildebeest, kudu, red hartebeest, and blesbuck. Notably, 60”+ kudu can be found in the surrounding free-range areas. You might get lucky with dedication and effort, especially during the months of April and May (any kudu over 60” incurs an additional $8,000 trophy fee). The eland here are also especially noteworthy, with old bulls that have the fringe and the body size that is in demand! Cape buffalo, ranging from 40” to 48”, are also abundant, alongside red hartebeests scoring above 23” and blesbucks between 16” and 18”.

During your hunt, you may encounter hippos and crocodiles near the concession's water sources. Watch out! The Crocs here are big and hungry! Overall, this reserve offers a unique area with top-quality animals that will ensure you harvest some of the finest plains game trophies around!

Hunting Seasons:

This hunt is available from March through September, but the ideal times are April through July. Coming anytime during this period will be prime hunting time.

Wing Shooting

Wing shooting days may be added in season. A mixture of upland bird hunting for Franklin and Guinea, Doves and Pigeons, and Ducks and Geese is available at an all-in daily rate of $345/day. Rifle rental is $25 / day plus ammo at cost. The current cost of shotgun ammo is about $17 / box.

Wing Shooting Seasons:

  • May: Ducks, Geese, Franklin and Guinea
  • June – August: Doves and Pigeons, Franklin and Guinea, Ducks and Geese

Wing Shooting Methods:

  • Pigeons and Doves – Hunt over Maize Fields
  • Franklin and Guinea – Hunt behind dogs or with the use of beaters
  • Ducks and Geese – Hunt from Blinds in the evenings when the birds are returning

They have solely managed it for over a decade, ensuring it overflows with only the best animals and the largest variety. Due to the diverse terrain, the concession can host a variety of animals, even 4 out of the Big 5, which is extremely unique for any concession in South Africa. Expect to see elephants, rhinos, and buffalo while glassing, walking, and stalking your plains game! They are dedicated to you harvesting the best trophies possible and snoring your time with them is comfortable and unforgettable. Their 4-star lodge and lodge staff are also some of the best and will do anything in their power to make sure you enjoy your time spent there.

The Lodge and Accommodations:

The lodge is 4 stars and the high rating shows. The food is delicious, the lodge staff is attentive and detailed, and the beds are comfortable and relaxing. It is very well-kept and provides a very inviting atmosphere for you to enjoy while there. Cell phone and internet services are available while in camp.

A Typical Day Hunting:

Your hunting day kicks off just before dawn. You’ll begin your morning with a choice between a light breakfast with coffee or a more substantial meal if desired before your hunting day begins. While you’re eating breakfast, your vehicle will be loaded with coolers stocked with drinks, water, and snacks for the day. Once you are finished eating and you and your PH have discussed the plan for the day, you will both set out for a thrilling day of hunting.

The primary hunting method for these plains game animals will be spot-and-stalk, where you will spend the morning scanning the terrain. There are various vantage points through the concession that you and your PH will stop at. Using these mountaintop lookouts, you'll glass the valleys and other prime areas, searching for the best trophies. You can expect to see a wide range of animals while glassing, with everything from buffalo to elephants and even rhinos!

As the heat of the day intensifies, you'll return to the lodge for a chef-prepared lunch, and then for a couple of hours of relaxation. You’ll need the downtime to recharge before the afternoon hunt resumes. In the late afternoon, you and your PH will head back out into the field, continuing the hunt until the evening.

Upon returning to the lodge, your dinner will be waiting to be served to you. Your day will conclude with sitting around the fire, sharing stories, and preparing for the next day's hunt. Each day promises new challenges and memorable experiences, ensuring a rewarding and unforgettable hunting trip.

They will then be salted and dried, and the salt will be changed daily. They will be handed off to Splitting Image, who will pick up the trophies within 7 days of your hunt.

Testimonials

"I looked long and far for a good deal on a lioness hunt.  By far, Discount African Hunts had the best price.  I had the hunt of a lifetime and took a beautiful lioness at close range with my bow.  The Professional Hunter was first class, the lodge was first class and my whole experience was unbelievable.  I will book with John Martins when I return to Africa to hunt leopard  in Zimbabwe.
