Hunting Cape Buffalo is one of the most exciting adventures you can experience in Africa! These animals are powerful, dangerous, and unpredictable, and hunting one always makes for an unforgettable experience!

About the Cape Buffalo:

The Cape Buffalo is one of the toughest and most respected animals to hunt in Africa. Known as the "Black Death", these massive, thick-horned beasts are unpredictable, incredibly strong, and will not hesitate to charge if they feel threatened. Even though they can grow up to 2,000 pounds, they are able to move through the bush with surprising speed and agility. Tracking a buffalo through the bush is an adventure itself as you follow their deep hoofprints through thick brush, trying to catch a glimpse of one before they spot you first.

Unlike other big game, a Cape buffalo often won’t just run away when wounded, as they are well-known to circle back and ambush its pursuer. That’s why buffalo hunting is often called the ultimate test of nerve and skill. Shots need to be well-placed, and even a solid hit might not drop one immediately. It’s an intense, adrenaline-pumping, and unforgettable hunt. Whether you’re after a hard-bossed old dagga boy or tracking a whole herd through the bushveld, Cape Buffalo hunting is about as real as it gets when hunting African big game.

The Cape Buffalo Hunting Area and Terrain:

Set in the Limpopo Province of South Africa, this 7,500-acre hunting concession near Alldays, just south of the Botswana border, is a prime destination for buffalo hunting. The land here is diverse, offering a range of landscapes that allows hunters to get a taste of many of the different terrains that South Africa offers!

The terrain has some open grassy plains, perfect for spotting buffalo from a distance, along with some dense bushveld, where these powerful animals often bed down during the heat of the day. Most of the concessionconsists of small shrubs and tall trees, perfect for providing some cover for the animals. The concession also has rolling hills, adding elevation changes that make stalking even more dynamic, along with riverine areas that serve as natural gathering points for wildlife. This mix of environments makes for an exciting and challenging hunt as each day can be vastly different than the last!

Cape Buffalo Hunting Seasons:

You can book this hunt year-round, allowing anyone with even the busiest schedules to make a trip to hunt Cape Buffalo. The best times to come hunt would be between May through September however, as the cooler weather allows the buffalo to be more active and gives you a better chance of finding the best trophy!

For years, this outfitter has built a solid reputation for delivering exceptional hunting experiences with both his top-tier trophy quality and outstanding service while out of the field. Now, through Discount African Hunts, he’s offering incredible hunting packages that combine exciting hunts with unbeatable value.

He keeps his kitchen staff high-end, and they consistently produce phenomenal meals every day. The entire experience from pickup to dropoff is great. This is one hunt you won’t want to miss!

The Cape Buffalo Lodge and Accommodations:

The lodge is 3.5-star and is very comfortable. Here, you’ll find a pool, patio, fire pit, lounge area, indoor and outdoor dining areas, and a bar. The rooms are all A/C equipped, have en-suite bathrooms and are comfortable to stay in.

Mealtime at the lodge is taken up to a new level. The food and drinks served are incredible, and eating here is certainly one thing you don’t want to miss! Cell phone and internet service are also available while in camp.

A Typical Day Hunting Cape Buffalo:

Your day starts before sunrise, with a light breakfast to fuel up before heading into the bush. As the morning hunt begins, you and your PH will scan the landscape for large buffalo herds, bachelor groups, or a lone dagga boy lurking in the thick brush. Even if no buffalo are in sight, fresh tracks, dung, or broken branches could signal that they’re nearby, setting the stage for an exciting pursuit. Once you catch a glimpse of one—or spot fresh signs—it’s time to get to work.

Expect to hunt these animals with your feet, tracking and stalking through the bush for as long as it takes to close the distance and find your trophy bull in the right size range. These stalks can last all day, bringing you face-to-face with the legendary Black Death of Africa. Staying sharp and aware of your surroundings is critical—buffalo are known for their unpredictability, and a poor approach could turn the hunter into the hunted.

For those who are mobility-limited, arrangements can be made to hunt from a blind.

Once you and your PH confirm that a mature trophy bull is within range, it’s time to set up your shot. Finding the right angle and distance is key, as buffalo are incredibly tough animals that rarely drop from a single shot. The moment you pull the trigger, be ready for a follow-up—these bulls don’t go down easily, and with the herd scattering, you’ll need to keep your sights on your bull to ensure a clean and successful recovery.

After the bull is down, the camp staff will move in to clean and transport him back to camp, where he’ll be skinned, salted, and prepared for his next stop at Splitting Image Taxidermy. It’s the perfect ending to an intense, adrenaline-fueled hunt, one that leaves you with a deep respect for these powerful animals and an unforgettable African experience.

'It was the most exciting hunt I have ever been on. We stalked a small bachelor group for a few days before I shot a mature cape buffalo with my Browning 375 H&H.'

'This was my third hunt with Discount African Hunts and each one has been fantastic.  I don't think I would book my future African hunts with anyone else.'

"I booked a plains game hunt in South Africa through Discount African Hunts.  The price was half of what other outfitters were selling the same package of animals for.  After being assured by John Martins that this offer was for real I went ahead and booked.  Everything turned out just like I was told and I took 7 beautiful trophies on the trip of my lifetime.  Don't let the low prices hold you back.  I am sure I will never take a hunt of this quality again at a price like I paid. My hunt was awesome!"
