Klipspringer and Red and Grey Duiker Hunting Methods

Hunting methods for this small antelope hunting safari will consist of utilizing both predator mouth calls and pre-recorded calls on a Foxpro. The Red Duiker hunt will occur in the dense forest areas that red duiker like to live in. A slow spot and stalk walk and then setting up to call in select areas will lead you to a shooting opportunity for this diminutive member of the tiny ten.

The Common Duiker will be primarily hunted by driving to an area that is frequented by Gray duikers and then doing a bit of walking and calling. You must be ready to shoot quickly, as at times these small antelopes will appear out of nowhere and run straight towards you.

The Klipspringer hunt will occur high up in the Soutpansberg Mountains and will be done by stopping at various locations where the outfitter will get you set up on the shooting sticks and then begin calling. Klipspringer are very curious animals and many of them will step out into view to to see where the sound is coming from. Sometimes they will start heading directly towards you so you must be ready for them to appear anywhere on the hillside. Klipspringer mate in pairs but are also found in small groups.

Good optics are a must to be able to sort out the trophy male in the group. A solid set of shooting sticks is also important. I found that many of the sticks over there did not give me the stability that was necessary to take some of the long shots up the mountain that were required.Fortunately, I had brought a set of Bog Pods along and these proved to be very stable and allowed me to take several sucessful shots during my hunt.

Best Times to Hunt

This hunt is available from March through November, with the winter being the preferred time (June-Sept). There are also some exceptional plains game trophies on this concession.  Plains game prices may be viewed via the link below:

If you hunt coincides with the zebra and impala breeding seasons, you may be able to take a good male impala and a zebra stallion, as they will also come to a call specific to their species.  This outfitter is the only one that I know of that offers hunts that are specifically tailored to calling these species in by this method.

If you have been to Africa may times before, why not try hunting Africa in a different and exciting method – by calling them in!

Most hunters will overnight in Johannesburg at the Afton Guest House and then take a short flight to Polokwane the next morning. The PH will pick you up at the Polokwane airport and transport you on a short one hour drive by vehicle to the hunting concession, where you can settle in and sight in your rifles in preparation for the first night's hunt.

"I looked long and far for a good deal on a lioness hunt.  By far, Discount African Hunts had the best price.  I had the hunt of a lifetime and took a beautiful lioness at close range with my bow.  The Professional Hunter was first class, the lodge was first class and my whole experience was unbelievable.  I will book with John Martins when I return to Africa to hunt leopard  in Zimbabwe.
