This small cat grand slam night hunt for Africa’s small cats will take in South Africa’s Mpumalanga Province and Kwazulu-Natal Provinces. This renowned South African outfitter has put together an amazing discounted package hunt for all of the small cats that can be hunted in South Africa today. For those of you that want to get these animals on one safari, this outfitter can get it done. He specializes in some of the rarer specialty animals and has good populations of these highly sought-after trophies.
The African Small Cat Hunting Area
The hunting location for this nighttime small cat grand slam hunting safari will take place in South Africa's Mpumalanga Province. One of the 1 hunting concessions is a 4-hour drive southeast of Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport. A 3-star lodge or bed and breakfast will be your headquarters for this nighttime hunt. His large concessions are well known for the quality hunting that they produce. This area gets cold in the winter, so extra clothing is advised if you will be hunting from June - August.
The countryside consists of undulating hills and grasslands.
The African Small Cat Hunting Lodge
You will be staying at either a 3-star lodge that features comfortable beds and en-suite bathroom facilities. The lodge has a spectacular view over a small lake and game area. The food, wine, and service at this lodge are a great example of what makes South African hospitality famous. Meals are served three times daily and are customized to a client’s particular taste. The majority of hunters want to eat some of the local game and the kitchen staff will be happy to show you their flair for preparing venison in a variety of tasty dishes.
Since you will be primarily hunting at night, the meal schedule will be adjusted to accommodate the hunting hours. This lodge features daily laundry service, an attentive camp staff, first-class sleeping accommodations, and everything that is required to make it easy to recuperate from a hard night in the bush.
The lodge features permanent electrical power. Cell phone service and internet are available in the camp.
African Small Cat and Nocturnal Animal Hunting Methods
Hunting methods for this nighttime small cat hunting safari will consist of multiple methods. One method will be to hunt at night from blinds over bait piles that are monitored by trail cameras. The trail cameras allow the PH to determine which baits are being hit nightly by the targeted species and get an idea of the times the animal is coming in to feed. A size assessment can also be made from good trail camera pictures.
Honey badgers, genets, and civets are known to frequent bait sites, so there is a good chance that you will do some of your hunting by using this method.
Another method that will be utilized is to drive around spotlighting these nocturnal animals. Spotlighting can be especially effective for serval, caracal, civet, African wildcat, and genet, so that method will likely be used when hunting these animals.
The serval prefers areas with cover such as reeds and tall grasses and proximity to water bodies, such as wetlands and savannahs. They are hunted on old river beds and marsh areas on this hunting concession.
This hunt is available from March through November, with March-May and September being especially good times for this hunt.
There are also some exceptional plains game trophies on this concession. This area of Mpumalanga is known for producing trophy bushbuck and reedbuck, so you might want to do a little daytime hunting as well. Plains game prices may be viewed via the link below:
GETTING THERE
Most hunters will overnight in Johannesburg at the Afton Guest House and will be picked up by the outfitter the next morning and driven to the hunting lodge. After you arrive you can settle in and sight in your rifles in preparation for the first night's hunt.
CLOTHING
You will spend quite a bit of time either in a blind or riding while spotlighting at night. Winter nights can be very cold, so be sure to bring a warm jacket, hat, hand, and ear coverings, and maybe even some toe warmers. A good pair of insulated underwear will also come in handy!
EQUIPMENT
A good scope that is clear and has a wide field of vision is important when night hunting. Often these animals will freeze for a few seconds when the spotlight beam hits them. The ability to quickly find them in your scope is an important aspect of this hunt. A good pair of binoculars will also aid you in judging your trophies. Quality optics are a big aid for this type of night hunt.
TAXIDERMY
If you decide to mount your animals in South Africa, Discount African Hunts recommends Splitting Image Taxidermy. They are the best taxidermist in South Africa and do excellent work. Should you wish to have your trophies mounted in the US, your trophies will be dipped and packed, and shipped to the taxidermist of your choice in the US.

Testimonials
"In August 2014 I took a lioness hunt with Discount African Hunts in the Northwest Province of South Africa. The PH's worked hard to customize the hunt for me as I wanted a challenging stalk ending with taking the lioness at close range by an open sighted double rifle. They exceeded my expectations as 12 miles of tracking ended with me shooting the highly agitated lioness at a distance of 25 yards with a couple of rounds of 450 NE".
"I highly recommend a lioness hunt with Discount African Hunts."
